Temporary Suspension of Problem Household Waste Disposal
Published on 28 February 2025
Due to a fire at the contractor’s waste depot in Sydney, Community Recycling Centres across NSW are temporarily unable to accept certain types of household waste.
As a result, the Community Recycling Centres in Grafton and Maclean, as well as the Grafton Regional Landfill, will be unable to accept the following items for the next four weeks or so:
- Batteries
- Light globes
- Oils
- Gas cylinders & fire extinguishers
- Aerosols
- Smoke detectors
- Paints
This temporary suspension is necessary to comply with NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) licensing conditions, which regulate storage limits for these materials.
Our facilities are nearing their capacity thresholds, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to manage these restrictions.
This closure does not apply to general waste (red bin) and recycling (yellow bin) waste services at Council’s waste transfer stations, which will operate as normal.
Residents are asked to store the items listed above in a cool, dry place away from children and pets while the NSW EPA, Cleanaway and councils resolve the issue.
Batteries under 5kg may be able to be taken to B-Cycle facilities at some local retail outlets. Locations can be found at https://bcycle.com.au/
We will provide advice as soon as our Community Recycling Centres can accept these waste items.
