Flood alert

Update as of 3pm 6 March 2025

What we know

  • NSW SES has issued a Stay Indoor – Watch and Act alert for Maclean, Yamba and surrounds.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology has released a Flood Watch for the NSW Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast. This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.
  • Moderate to major flooding may develop from later Thursday in the Flood Watch area. Flash flooding is possible. High tides and large waves are expected to increase the flood risk and impacts in low-lying coastal areas.
  • Catchments likely to be affected include:
    • Clarence River  - moderate to major flooding
    • Orara River  - moderate to major flooding
  • The Bureau of Meteorology advises that Gales with damaging wind gusts to 120 kilometres per hour are expected to develop along the remaining southeast Queensland and northeastern New South Wales coastal and island communities between Double Island Point and Ballina during Thursday evening, possibly extending as far south as Grafton. These damaging winds are forecast to persist during Friday before easing during Saturday.
  • Sandbagging self-serve stations have been established in Copmanhurst, Coutts Crossing, Grafton, Harwood, Maclean, Ulmarra, Yamba and Wooli. Updates are given by SES – the link is below.
  • This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.
  • Evacuation centres are run and managed by the Department of Communities and Justice. When an evacuation centre is activated, NSW SES will provide information to the community. Link is below.
  • Bin services will continue to be collected today 6 March – please store these safely once emptied. Bins will not be collected on Friday 7 March. The Friday collection is now planned to occur in accessible locations on Monday 10 March. Please do not put out your bins until needed.
  • Council customer service centres, libraries, gallery, pound, parks, reserves and sports fields along with the Clarence Regional Aquatic Centre and Coutts Crossing Golf Course are closed. Residents can still contact Council via phone or email during normal business hours.

    What we’re doing

  • Clarence Valley Council staff are currently following Flood Plain Management procedures to prepare to respond to any community asset interruptions while working alongside the NSW SES.
  • Flood cameras – The Flood Monitoring Cameras are now back up and running: www.clarence.nsw.gov.au/Emergencies-Disasters/Flood-monitoring-stations
  • All CVC staff are currently preparing for storm and flood response and are prioritising Urgent priority activities. These include trees over the road. 
  • Non-urgent maintenance requests can be logged and will be assigned to the responsible officer but we will not be viewing anything or responding to any customers until post event.

  • Stay indoors where possible.
  • Stay away from beaches, rock platforms, and coastal areas.
  • Secure any items that could be blown around your property.
  • Stay informed with the latest warnings and messaging.
  • Report any issues such as fallen trees by calling our customer service team on 02 6643 0200.
  • In case of possible mobile network outages - Charge devices and portable chargers, save important contacts, and know where your nearest payphone is located.

  • The Bureau of Meteorology advises Tropical Cyclone Alfred is moving towards the southeast Queensland coast, with the far western edge already impacting the coast from about Coolangatta to Ballina.

Update -Wednesday 5 March 2025

***CLOSURES AND SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS***

In line with current weather warnings, there will be impacts to Council services from tomorrow morning (8.30am Thursday 6 March 2025). Advice regarding reinstatement of services will be provided over the weekend, or early into next week.  

Council front line services will be closed, including: 

  • Customer Service Centres
  • Libraries
  • Grafton Regional Gallery
  • Pound
  • Clarence Regional Aquatic Centre
  • Parks, reserves and sports fields
  • Coutts Crossing Golf Course

Customer contact phone and email services are planned to remain open during normal business hours from 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Inspection services will be rescheduled for an appropriate time following the event. 

Bins collections will continue tomorrow (Thursday 6 March), however will be cancelled on Friday 7 March due to safety concerns with bins and debris. Residents are reminded to remove bins from sidewalks and secure in a safe place.

***BIN COLLECTION & WASTE SERVICE STATIONS ***

Bins will not be collected on Friday 7 March due to the risk of them blowing away and causing injury or harm. This includes red, yellow and green bins. Please do not put your bins out for collection this Friday and ensure any bins are safely secured.

Areas impacted by this include:

  • Organics (Green Bin) - Copmanhurst, Seelands, Junction Hill, Westlawn, Maclean, Townsend, James Creek
  • Recycle (Yellow Bin) - Maclean, Townsend
  • Waste  (Red Bin) - Baryulgil, Fineflower, Coaldale, Copmanhurst, Seelands, Westlawn, Junction Hill, Summerland Way to Pringles Way, Trenayr, Maclean, Townsend, James Creek

The Friday collection is now planned to occur in accessible locations on Monday 10 March.

Please put your bins out as normal for the week commencing 10 March. Please be patient as there may be a delay of up to one day as a result of our team playing catch-up from the previous Friday. Possible flooding of roads and low-lying areas may cause further impacts.

Waste transfer stations at Glenreagh, Tyringham, Baryulgil, Iluka and Minnie Water will close over the weekend and reopen Monday. The Grafton Regional Landfill, and the Maclean and Grafton Waste Transfer stations will remain open under normal business hours over this time.
